The features editor is the leader of all day-to-day activities in editorial department, and responsible for a team of two full-time employees, 1-2 freelance writers, and 1-3 interns (who you will be responsible for managing and hiring twice/year). You'll help organize and oversee the design department's editorial tasks, working on a near-daily basis with our print designer, web designer, and photo editor. You'll collaborate with and report to our managing editor and editor-in-chief.
You will assign and manage the flow of all editorial content and publishing on the website, and will do a 1st round edit and then final edits and approval of all editorial content published on the website and in any related print collateral.
Feature ideas will be generated by you, by the editor in chief, and by your staff; we try to promote as collaborative and open an environment as possible. Along with the requisite holiday- and seasonal-themed features, you'll be expected to create and maintain a schedule of editorial features inspired by our travels, tastings, and trends.
Writing: You will be expected to be able to write 2500-word feature-length articles, brief technique features, and everything in between. You'll work with the Editor-in-Chief on Letters from the Editor, prepare presentations and speeches for conferences and Rising Stars awards. (Feature writing is, however, less than 30% of the job.)
Travel: You will be expected to travel to various American cities for Rising Stars tastings and industry events (IACP, WCR National Conference, etc). Occasionally travel will take you outside the country for international culinary conferences (Madrid Fusion, Identita Golose, Lo Mejor de la Gastronomia, and so on).
Rising Stars: You will be responsible for tastings and editorial writing for our 4 annual Rising Stars chef awards. You will organize and attend tasting trips and the tasting and awards gala in the respective cities. Once the winners are chosen, you'll be responsible for publishing the winner' bios, recipes and interviews on the website, an event program book, and features describing the culinary scene in that city.
International Chefs Congress: You'll be involved in planning the theme, presenters and programming for the annual International Chefs Congress, and will be responsible for all ICC content for the website and the program book, and daily wrap-ups during the event.
